“This is the real secret of life – to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.” – Alan Watts
Today was awesome! After a particularly early 6am wake up, Team Tuani was ready to hit the slopes of Cerro Negro for some once in a lifetime volcano boarding. Cerro Negro (Black Hill) is an active volcano outside of Leon, Nicaragua. It’s a relatively new one at only 161 years old. Because the cone is primarily made up of small penny-sized grains of volcanic rock, it’s possible to ride down the steep slope on a wooden sled. This is a result of the wind conditions during the 1999 eruption, which pushed the ash to one side of the mountain, making it very “smooth”. This the only place in the world where volcano boarding is possible!
Because Cerro Negro erupts frequently and consistently, another, larger eruption is expected within the next decade, which will likely end the possibility of boarding down it.
On our way to the top, we had some beautiful, lush green scenic views contrasting the stark black of the volcano. At the top we looked down into the steaming crater, and felt the volcanic rocks and ash on the ground, which we’re burning hot – no more proof needed of this volcano’s activity! 🌋
Although some of these California kids might never have sledded down a snowy hill, they can now add volcano boarding to their list of awesome skills 😎
Tomorrow is Free Day so we’ll be continuing to explore León and support the local economy with gifts for you all. Be on the look out for an email from your awesome Glimpser or a phone call from an ‘Unknown’ number! Apologies in advance if the line cuts short or disconnects early – the Internet cafes can be inconsistent but we appreciate your patience!!
Big ❤️,
Sophie
Wow!!! What an incredible experience! Everything you have done on this trip will provide you with lifetime memories and appreciation for what we have! So proud of you, Logan! Can’t wait to hear lots of stories when I come to visit in July. Love you bud! Aunt Darcy
OMG volcano boarding…how super cool! Logan was it like sledding? At least for volcano boarding you did not have to be bundled up in multiple layers to stay warm… barely being able to move because of all the clothing layers needed when out in the snow! What a fun experience! So glad you all had this opportunity! And a free day today to take in Leon, relax and do what your groups choose…enjoy! Continue to enjoy this journey and all that is has to offer…in addition to what you offer to those you come in contact with…”be the change you wish to see in the world”…Gandhi Lots of love to you Logan! Miss you, Mom and Luke
