We arrived late last night in Managua and stayed at Hotel Mozonte. We had a late dinner at the hotel while the kids competed in some geographical trivia; the winners were George and Sophia. Then it was off to bed.

We had a 6AM wake up before enjoying gallo pinto, nacatamales, fruit, eggs, and other traditional breakfast foods. We boarded the bus for our 2.5 hour drive to Matagalpa, on which we enjoyed the sites of the mountains and smaller villages. We arrived midmorning at Hostel El Ray, immediately jumping to an accommodation orientation and culture & safety seminar.

After lunch, we enjoyed the company of Julio Pérez, a tactician in the Nicaraguan Revolution.

Following our personal history lesson, we split into two groups and learned firsthand some of the history of the city on a walking tour, stopping at Centro Heroes y Mártires, Colegio San Luis, and the statue of Rubén Dario. For two hours, the group got to know the history of their new home away from home.
