Hey guys back at home, It’s Margaret and Kassandra here as another pair of Liders del Dia (Leaders of the Day). Today our delegation was able to visit “Punta de Plancha” which is a small community in Leon of eight houses consisting of families ranging from three to ten members in each household. We got to experience how they do laundry, wash dishes, what they do for free time and much more. That’s A LOT of things! Many of our non-Spanish speakers escaped their comfort zone by communicating with the locals. We then ate lunch with our families and had the chance to have more conversations with them. Our Glimpsers showed much compassion to the neighborhood by playing soccer with them, playing with their toy cars and fixing their bikes. After creating such an awesome bond with our families, it was hard to say goodbye. Unfortunately, the community leader Dominga de los Angeles Quinteros Mayorga has some health issues, so we decided to help her out with a ride to the local clinic and money donations, hoping she feels better soon.
The ride back to the hostel was filled with the different stories being told about each glimpsers’ family. One group even helped their family make tortillas. We arrived back to hostel around 1 pm, and prepared for our program seminar where we created an action plan for our CAP project. In the meantime, we were able to pick up our laundry. Everyone was really happy! After the seminar, we had a bit of extra free time to prep for our English tutoring. We then went to dinner where we discussed the final decisions on our plan for English tutoring. And for the FIRST time the leaders of the day led the group to the English tutoring building and it was such a success. We tutored our groups that had at least twenty students each and faced challenges to communicate with them but then eventually over passed that great challenge. The students were very open minded and enjoyed learning English. There was one person in particular who is learning English to communicate with tourists like us because he is a taxi driver, so it was really amazing to see what their purposes were to learn English.
As leaders of the day we learned to balance authority and enhance our voices. Being a pair of female leaders we found strategies be directive without being too pushy. Our group was actually very attentive and respectful when we gave certain demands as to what to do through out the day, they really helped out a lot through out this long, stressful, hectic day.
Hi Glimpsers!
This is Sarry’s mom Jordi, and I am very touched by reading the latest blog on how you all have donated funds to help with the community leaders medical care. Really shows compassion on your end and I am sure makes you all very thankful for the medical coverage your family provides for you. Another thing that made me smile was reading how happy you all were to get your clean laundry back. I am sure helping with laundry at home wont be such a big chore now! LOL
You all hang in there, I know it has been hard being so far away from family and dealing with the extreme heat. Just keep on getting everything you can form this experience. It really is once in a lifetime opportunity!
Hey, the blogs are just getting better and better and looks amazing. Hope the best for the community leader. Were the kids as bad as me? Lol. How’s the Spanish going too ? You’ve talked in Spanish at least once, you’re good at it !! Better then me. Btw… Vic was hanging out with Ven. Hi Anthono (: It makes me super happy seeing all of the wonderful things that you’re doing and it makes me especially happy that you’re having such a great time. I’m leaving to D.C in a few days, so I’m really excited for that! I probably wont have as much fun as you’re having but I’ll update you on all of the specifics when you come back.(: AP and IB exam scores came in and I’m really glad to say that I’M NOT EMO AT ALL!!! I did pretty well so I can only expect that you did extremely well also. That’s really the only good news I have from home. LMAO I’m sorry to bring in school at a time that you’re NOT supposed to be thinking about these things, but I hope I somewhat reassured you. I also taught Hercules a new trick! He jumps over narrow obstacles and I give him treats. If anything else interesting happens I’ll let u know. Love these blog posts and pics!!
It is so neat to hear how you all interacted with the locals first-hand. I loved how you helped out your community leader with her health issues – a small act goes a long way! I am sure your impact on the community is greatly appreciated. Sounds like you all are working hard so THANK GOODNESS you were able to do laundry!!
Haley – This one picture of you hugging a young boy could not suit you better… and I can tell by your huge smiles you’re having a great time! Even thought you’re English tutoring maybe you’re learning some Spanish too 😉
Update: Finished a fun weekend in Tahoe. Started working out at the gym lol. Can’t wait for you to join me, but meanwhile cherish every moment there!
I love and miss you!
xo,
Amanda
What an amazing opportunity for all of you to interact with families. As parents, Adam and I (Alina’s parents) have always tried to explain to our kids the simple needs others have and the humble life others live outside of the USA. This experience is priceless. Alina now gets to see it first hand. SF Giants update Dad and Aleksys went to the game (they took Teresa Coniglio too) SF won 5-1 against Colorado Rockies and are now 6 games over the Dodgers. FYI- Giants have the best record in baseball!!!!! We all miss you a ton. Love you, MOM
