The sounds we experienced at Estelimar, a school for underprivileged children right outside the city of Esteli. After waking up bright and early at 7 AM we ate breakfast at the infamous buffet Esteli. After a short 15 minute bus ride, driven by our very favorite Ishmael we arrived at Estelimar. We were warmly welcomed by Lipsa, a staff member of the school, who taught us all about the art of agriculture in Nicaragua.

Estelimar takes an approach of teaching students in a practical sense and has a model farm to teach students techniques of farming. We split up into groups and helped out on the model farm. One group was creating trenches to plant beans. The second group built a fence for cucumbers to grow on. the third group started a new garden. Finally, the last group weeded and planted carrots. Along with helping out on the farm we learned about coffee production and how important it is to Nicaraguan culture and economy. after lunch, we learned about geography of Nicaragua and our “departamento” of Esteli. We were taught about the five “ministerios” in Esteli and did a quick puzzle to learn what makes up the department. Next, we relaxed for the rest of the afternoon swimming, playing soccer and playing cards at Estelimar.

We drove back to the hotel and prepared for our first English class. Unfortunately our first English class was cancelled due to a miscommunication of the start date. But, we enjoyed the evening hanging out, talking to some local bomberos “firefighters” and just having fun.

Lastly, we walked back to the hotel for our nightly meeting and a celebration of Matt’s birthday. We enjoyed cake and hung out the rest of the evening. Overall, a long fun filled day with learning and much fun.
