Today was an awesome cultural day! We all had a great time meeting new people, eating new foods, and learning new dance moves!
We took an adventure to an indigenous community where we able to make our own natural jewelry with seeds of local fruits and vegetables. The women who worked there were strong and independent making their living from the beautiful jewelry. They aided us with the complicated knots to finding the right seeds for our creations. We supported them buy purchasing their bracelets, necklaces, belts, earing, and purses.
After we headed over to the house of Dona Adalila and learned how to make delicious nacatamales (Nicaraguan tamales) from women who have been cooking them for over a decade. The nacatamales weren’t like the ones in the states, they had vegetables, rice, and a bit of kick with the spices. Everyone enjoyed eating nacatamales.
After eating the yummy nacatamales, we had a energetic workout learning Latin dances like zumba, salsa, and the tradition folk dance. Zumba was fast and very energetic and everyone worked up a sweat and kept up. Salsa was fun learning the step and partnering up to dance. For the folk dance, the girls got the opportunity to dance in the gorgeous skirts. Everyone had a great time and were amazing dancers!
Cultural day was a great experience which brought us closer to the Nicaraguan culture with the people, food, and art.
