Today has been a day of laughter and smiles. We have started to get into understanding about Government, History and what has made the Dominican Republic the place that it is today. These are all great facts and really import to understand the background of a place. Understanding, education, and experience are important lessons in a brand new culture and place. However, it’s also important to understand about the arts and practices that give the people life and joy in their daily lives. Today we got the chance to experience the hearts of the people on island and their art practices. This is what makes moments memorable. Today we had the joy of being able to hear the music of the island. Santeria, Merengue, Bachata, Mangulina these are all dances and music that are alive on the island. Students got to see hear and feel what it was like to play the traditional drums and more important how the artist feels as they play. Students then got to learn the particular dances. This was my favorite part of the day. Seeing students break out of their comfort zones and get down! Laugh and learn!! Most important that dance and movement are a universal language Students were able to communicate with the whole group through dance. When others were speaking their might have been words missed or translation confusion but in the langue of dance you are able to speak and communicate. I feel very fortunate to have been a part of this day and how movement and music make so much or our health, happiness, and how the arts makes us rich with joy. I hope students will take this dance lesson back to the states and be teachers themselves and help tell the story of dance here.
