Heyo!

It’s Aditi and Hattie, today’s Lider del Dia!

We started this morning off by waking up at 7:30 AM and preparing ourselves to welcome for an incredibly inspirational activist for Dominicans of Haitian descent, Ana Maria. We later watched a documentary that went into detail about the current immigration issues here in the Dominican. Ana Maria, the star of the movie, was able to answer any questions that we had, further bringing to light the issues that Dominicans of Haitian descent face without much media coverage. For many of us, this was the first time that we heard of the immigration issues that play a constant role in the lives of hundreds of thousands of citizens. More specifically, law 169-14 restricted Dominicans of Haitian descent from being officially recognized as Dominican citizens. Many officials questioned the purity of their roots and restricted them from receiving their birth certificate. The birth certificate is one of the most important documents that would have allowed them to further themselves in Dominican society.Ā  The document is a requirement to enroll students into school and acquire a higher paying job.

Later in the day we headed out for English tutoring. Upon arriving we had to adjust to our lesson plans to accommodate some of the classrooms being combined. Even so, the groups reported a successful tutoring session and we headed back to the accommodations to get started on our CAP proposal. Tomorrow (August 1), we’ll be heading to our community to present the proposal.

As LDD, the day didn’t seem as jam-packed as other days, so the day went pretty smoothly and stress free.

P.S. Hi Appu, mama, and papa! I miss you guys! My next free day is on Friday so expect a call then šŸ˜‰ Love you and can’t wait to see you on August 8th! (Also, happy early b’day mama) – Aditi šŸ™‚
