First day of English tutoring.

First day of English tutoring.

Hello families, it was a jam packed day here in Estelí in which I was “el lider del día.” Today I gave my fellow glimpsers an early morning wake up call at 5:00. We began our day centered around education at a school, Liceo Cátolico Maria Auxilidadora, shadowing a high school student. We tried blending in as much as we could with a white shirt and dark bottoms. This private school was so different from the schools in the U.S. because the rooms are not separated by walls and the teachers rotate around the classes for all the periods. I was with my high school buddy for her language and history classes in which I had to introduce myself then later participate in activities like syllable counting in front of the class from well known Nicaraguan poems. Later on in the day we were given a tour of Ásociación Familiar Padre Fabretoo, which is a fantastic and heartfelt organization that provides schooling for children to help get them off the streets and provide a viable source of education for them. Octavio Fabretoo is the man who began this wonderful organization that provides education and lunches for about 400 children. Classes are chosen by the kids and they include computer, English, and math classes.

We continued on this day of education by hosting our first tutoring classes at Vida Joven in which I and my extremely helpful partner Lupe taught the alphabet, numbers, and colors to a group of adult students. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had because I was able to help others learn and have oodles of fun while doing so. We had three levels of basic, intermediate, and advanced tutoring classes and I was teaching the basic level with people who knew hardly any English at all. Being the  first the leader of the day was a daunting task with lots of responsibility, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Hey Mrs. M we are thinking of you and wish you the best, we have a great new GG leader Brian who is a great addition to the Global Glimpse family.

Notable quotes from the glimpsers today:

Franny: “Something that really stuck out to me was even though it was a loud environment in the classroom, the students were very focused in contrast to what I have seen at my school with people in a quiet classroom, that are spaced out/zoned out.”

Bonnie: “I really liked all of the people I met and tutoring was such a fun experience.”

Jessica: “I value my school so much more now.”

Sean: “I couldn’t really stick to the lesson plan, but we ended up talking and other people were really nerdy too. I feel really privileged to do this.”

Goodnight all, I need to get my rest for tomorrow’s aid and development day. Keep up the commenting, we really appreciate it. 🙂
