Today we focused on the water systems of the Dominican Republic. After breakfast we planned to start our Mental Warm-Up meeting, however, we were surprised that Avani prepared a game of musical chairs for us! With four winners in the end, we wrapped up our meeting by going over the reasons why we were going to Plan Yaque.

Plan Yaque is a non-governmental organization that helps improve the water quality of the Dominican Republic. At Plan Yaque, we met Olmedo and his German-born team member, who elaborated on the current water systems in the DR and how they are working to improve the water quality through various methods by building treatment tanks.

After the presentation, we rode back in the safari bus to our hostel and had lunch. We then had the Program Seminar introducing us to the reason why we take part in CAP (Community Action Project). Following this, we took a 40-minute ride on the safari truck to the CAP Community, where we saw the area that we would be contributing to.

The ride up the hill to the community was definitely an experience. With the bumps and slopes of the hills, many were sliding in their seats, waving at the community members, and also picking flowers as they passed by flower bushes.

Once we came back, we had a long free time where many were playing cards, swimming, playing volleyball, or just talking with each other (both us writers it got purple marks on our arms from volleyball :)). Then we had dinner, where many continued playing card games through the meal and even after finishing their plates, up until the nightly meeting.

During the nightly meeting, we went over what we learned about the water system and what we can do as Glimspers to contribute to the community. It was a chance for us to reflect on how we did as leaders and also gave us a chance to look back on ourselves and what we can improve on. As leaders, we learned to support each other even though we were the leaders and got the chance to know each other better. It was definitely an exciting and busy day, especially with the fun safari truck rides and the laughter and memories it has given us.

P.s. If my familia is reading this I’m doing good, I was laughing at anything and everything happening. I’ve met and became close to people. AND I hope Benny and Nugget (my dogs) are doing good… And Ma tell Pa, I’ve been doing gardening over here (aver que dice) :)) – Eli

Second ps: I’m having so much fun getting to know everyone and learning about how things are here. Other than getting bitten like 16 times on the leg by mosquitos (ONLY on the legs..?), I’m great…! Hope everyone’s great 🙂 – Ashley
