IMG_3616Today we had a very packed and busy schedule. First, we had to wake up at 5:00 am to start the day off. At approximately 5:45 we had sandwiches for breakfast before we headed out of the hostel to go to Teresiano High School to shadow as a high school student. We arrived at the high school at 7:00 just in time to start first period. Some of the classes that we experienced were physical education, mathematics, physics, chemistry, religion, computer class, English, and politics. I found it very interesting that students in Nicaragua do not really pay attention in school and just keep talking while the teacher is talking, or some students would not turn in their homework because they did not complete the assignments. Shadowing a high school student was a very fun experience for all of us and we thoroughly enjoyed it. At 12:45 pm, class ended and we all headed back to the hostel. We finally ate a well-deserved lunch at 1:15 pm and had free time until 2:30 pm. At 2:30 pm, we headed to the Carita Feliz. We had a talk with the director of the afterschool tutoring place. After the talk, we helped the little kids with their homework that included numbers, Spanish words, and coloring. Working with little kids was a great experience because seeing the smiles on their faces was a great feeling. At 4:00 pm, we left Carita Feliz to head to Ave Nicaraguita to help with English tutoring. As a whole, English tutoring has become a lot easier since we slowly eased our way into the teaching environment. As teachers, we made a stronger connection between us and the students to make class flow smoother. After two hours of English tutoring, we headed to Don Carlos’s restaurant to eat dinner. Afterwards, we ended the night with our nightly meeting. Overall, I learned so much about how school in Nicaragua worked and how we should put more importance on education.
