Hey people!!! Today we discussed the topic of immigration in the Dominican Republic (DR). We learned that most of the immigrants coming into the DR are Haitians, and they are being heavily discriminated against. After a grueling four hours of traveling to Juan Dolio, we visited ASCALA, which is an organization that focuses on helping immigrants in the DR. They focus on the humanity of the immigrants rather than seeing them as pawns for profit. We were all astonished when we learned about the racial discrimination in regard to the skin color of immigrants, mainly Haitians, and immigrants with darker skin. One place that resonated with us was the Bateyes-a community that was built around a sugar cane farm. Being able to meet Domingo, who is a Haitian immigrant who successfully moved up the Dominican social ladder, allowed us to learn about how severe the Haitian living conditions are. We were most proud of the profound questions that the Glimpsers were asking, which allowed for further dialogue. Being Lider Del Dia was stressful due to the number of changes in the schedule; however, demanding our Glimpsers was the most fun we had on the trip!! All jokes aside, we learned a lot about ourselves, and being able to lead our peers allowed for a new positive mindset to prosper. Thank you for your support and admiration! We will continue to be safe yet yearning for the danger of education!
