We had a 6 AM wake-up call where we decided to bring the energy and use a speaker to blast music in each of the houses to wake up the rest of the group. After everyone had breakfast, we took the bus to Juan Dolio where we had lunch at the house we will be spending the night in. We then did our main activity for the day which was visiting ASCALA. It is an organization where people help Haitian immigrants get documentation, support, and jobs in the D.R. Eugenia (the director) gave us a speech about how our actions and thoughts can influence how others are treated. She also provided a tour of the institution where we met lawyers and secretaries (some of the many services they have there). We then heard from Abdias, a Haitian immigrant who works for ASCALA and has lived in the D.R. for 15 years. We learned a lot about the history and current status of not only Haitians in the D.R. But also their descendants. From there we took a bus ride to a sugar cane field where we talked to Domingo (a Dominican-born Haitian) about a typical day working on the field. We returned to the house where we all swam in the pool (and even threw the PC Noé into the pool too!) we ended the night with tacos and sunset/stargazing on the roof!

Love you mom and dad, hope y’all are doing well.
