With students in Chile

Hey Glimpsers!

I’ll try to keep this short and sweet!

My name is Jennifer Zhang and I’ll be one of your Global Glimpse Leaders your trip to Estelí, Nicaragua in 9 days! I am currently working on my Master’s degree in linguistics, and I hope to continue with a PhD. I took a break between undergraduate and graduate education, which led to some unexpected journeys and adventures along the way.

I decided to teach English in Chile for a year in 2013, teaching 6th to 12th grade students. Other than my linguistics background which helped a lot as far as translating words and concepts between English and Spanish, I had never formally taught classes; teaching English in Chile was a crash course in classroom management, lesson planning creativity, and really understanding all the work my own teachers had invested into their classes.

My plan was then to slowly backpack my way north, but toward the end of my stay in Chile, I found out about Global Glimpse. I thought they were running a pretty cool program and I was ecstatic to be a part of what they were doing both within the USA and around the world! Now I can’t wait to make my way back to Nicaragua with you all and meet all the warm people, eat the delicious food, and enjoy the beautiful sites in and around Estelí! Oh, and to practice my Spanish which has probably gotten a bit rusty!

See you soon!
